DON

Don: Movie Review

Two men:both aiming to transcend their idols. One, a young director who wants to carve a niche for himself that would stand tall even against the alpine achievements of his father cum idol Javed Akhtar. Another, an ageing actor, perhaps at the twilight of his career seeking the one masterpiece that would compensate for the height he lacks when he stands in front of his icon Amitabh Bachhan.

It was a valiant effort from both of them indeed but unfortunately i would have to say that one of them failed miserably while the other just couldnt make it.

Don is a moivie that was released amongst great hype and expectations. The hype helped its cause but i believe it will fail to rise gainst the expectations.

Unlike his previous servings, Farhan Akhtar displays lack of directorial experience in this movie.he just couldn't handle the plot at all. A few rather innovative mutations were brought about in the plot which if handled properly would have guaranteed a masterpiece of a movie, but which due to some ludicrous screenplay, made the film lose its impact. The story becomes all predictable thanx to the awry screenplay.

Shahrukh Khan, living up to his name gave us a Don who although different from the original one succeeds in making the same type of impact but in the other character namely Vijay, what he gave was certainly not his best performance. He had given a far better (UP/Bihari type guy) performance in the movie Shakti. In this one he just looked like a poor imitation of the original Vijay.

Boman Irani did a job well done while Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal more than impress. They were truly an asset to the movie.Priyanka Chopra emerges as the only actor who portrayed her character far better than even the original one.

The character of Om Puri has no weightage in the movie and so here too the director lets an actor like Om Puri go totally unnoticed in the movie.

Overall, due to the rfreshing looks of the movie, some good performances, impressive action and stunts and a really gripping performance by Shahrukh as the Don, the movie does succeed in keeping you away from yawn during the two and a half hour run. Thus its a good movie to watch once.

As people come out after watchin the movie, one thing over which i am sure most would agree is that:

"DON ko remake karna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai"

But if one of them,
Wants to go high,
All the others,
Block together,
Its way to the sky"

"Patience of course is a nice virtue,
But see that it never hurts you,
By keeping you at bay,

A Single.....

A single word can mean it all,
A single smile can make your day,
A single lamp is all it takes,
To keep darkness away!

A single tree shelters so many,
A single flower puts hate away,
A single star is all it takes,
To show you the way!

A single day can change a life,
A single idea can change the globe,
A single hand is all it takes,
to give life to adobe!

A single song enkindles the heart,
A single voice can contain,
A single touch is all it takes,
to alleviate the pain!

A single step marks a journey,
A single drop can quench the thirst,
A single hope is all it takes,
To hold against the worst!

A single spark can burn the woods,
A single stream can enrich the view,
A single Man can change the world,
Can that man be you?

"Myself" (in quotes)

"When a poem doesn't come out good, I feel like blowing it apart with a
bomb, But when it doesn't come out at all, I feel like blowing myself
apart. Thats why I keep disgorging one every now and then!"

My take on nationalism

I see nationalism as a phenomenon no different from a bunch of ppl forming a grp in the class durin schooldays. Its human nature, to form grps and societies. A nation is just a larger form of the same. Man being a social animal needs a society, a community and at a larger level a nation to survive.(jus to survive). An organised human existence is hard to imagine without the existence of nations. An important factor here is the basic desire in man to gain a superior position than others. Individually this would hav been difficult. So nationalism, which i believe comes instinctively to us was the only solution.
Also i believe its not only the culture that leads to formation of a nation. Not at all. 59 yrs back the cultural diffrences between Delhi and Lahore were far greater than those between Delhi and chennai. In fact this may be the case even today. Still Delhi and Chennai find themselves in the same nation and that too a successful one if i may say so. So there are a lot of factors which lead to the formation of a nation which actually me and you as a single person can not analyse so easily.
All that we can do is appreciate the fact that the phenomenon of nationalism is afterall for good.
And yes we do take a lot from what we call our our country and a social debt does exist for us to pay.
So i wouls suggest: just take pride in being a part of whatever nation you belong to. Believe it or not your nation does have a great impact on what you are. So celebrate the unity of a grp of people who did nothin but had a synergy amongst them to mutually coexist and co-develop. Thats what nationalism is for me and thats why i m proud to be an indian.

Reservation : A mentality

In the last few days, my experiences and observations have taught me one
thing:
that 'Reservation'is not just a political problem but a  mentality which resides in all of us in varying sizes. When we talk about reservation, we generaly talk about the reservations provided to various quotas politically and with all sorts of arguments we oppose it but while doing so we often forget that we too contribute to the system of reservation in various ways almost every other day.
When i go to board the bus to my college in the morning,I find myself groping for a seat while half the bus looks unoccupied. Reason: almost every person sitting inside has a seat reserved for one or more of his friends. Now the crowd in our bus becomes unbearable sometimes and therefore a standing ride early in the morning can tire you enough to compell you to bunk your class in the last period and come to the bus early in the afternoon while returning. Thats what I do and while I do so, obviously i too oblige a few friends of mine by reserving a few seats for them. But actually I have no other choice. Not because the rush in the bus plays the vilain but because if i do not reserve the seats on time someone else would and again i may not get a seat even if i board a half unoccupied one.
Next comes the mess where again i find the display of profound friendship by people who at any cost want to sit with their friends as if this is one last supper for them. So obviously reservation system again comes into play.
These are just two small examples from my daily life.If you observe keenly you would certainly realise that that such examples are lying all around us and in fact we are more often than not a contributor to it.
So, what i want to say here is that simply opposing the reservation system in the political circles is not enough. We need to eliminate this mentality from the society. Each one for himself should be the new motto of ours. Only then can we say that we are fighting reservation system in the true sense.
