Alvida Chennai

Time to bid goodbye to the Lungi-land. Yeah, I am finally leaving Chennai and going to Baroda with a hope that I won't have to return. For the first time in my life I am kissing a city goodbye without any emotional strings attached. Four years in the city and no attachments to it at all! No its not my hatred for the city which makes me say this. In fact I have come to realize that Chennai is not a bad city at all. It offers you a lot of things that many other cities don't but its the circumstances, the people you deal with, the expectations you have and the luck you bring that makes you like or dislike a place. In my case, its the negatives of these factors that I had to cope with.
There were those golden moments of course. There were moments when the breezy sea stole my heart away, when the movie halls and crowded buses felt more comfortable than my bed, when I laughed and so did my soul and when I did not hesitate in calling my squalid room as 'Home'. But then, a major factor that made those moments so precious were my beloved friends and 'I shall miss them' is an understatement. The city however could never seduce me. I remained for it, an estranged lover.
But to the city that saw four very important years in my life, the city which taught me many lessons, the city that made me see myself in a different light and the city that made a fighter out of me certainly deserves a blog post at least. So, alvida Chennai, for the time being at least and I hope that either we never meet again or you do not appear with the same darkness again.

Dard -e-Disco - Lyrics Review!

8-9-Shahrukh-Khan1-719012

What must have been going on in Javed Akhtar's mind when he penned this song? After spending more time on the interpretation of this song than on the toughest of Data interpretation questions in a Mock CAT, I am still clueless. Well, a literal translation of this term in English would be - The Pain of Disco.
Now unable to comprehend the 'gehraai' of this term, the only theory that I could come up with, is this -
I've heard that OSO is an "inspired" derivative of the 1970s blockbuster 'Karz'. Even the name of the movie has been picked from one of the songs of Karz. I guess the makers of OSO must have been pretty obsessed with that movie. Anyway, Karz had this song 'Dard-e-dil' in it and copying the term as it is shayad thoda jyada ho jata. So these people must have decided to go with Dard-e-something else. But for God's sake, why Disco?

I mean who the hell ever feels the pain of Disco? You see, dil nahi to body ka koi aur part chose kar lete! Dard-e-Sar (Headache), Dard-e-Pet (Stomach ache), Dard-e-g**d (pain in ass), all could have been justified logically but not Dard-e-disco yaar! Moreover, the lyrics say 'Dil me mere hai dard-e-disco'. Arey disco karne pe agar dard hua bhi to hath, pair, kamar, peeth, agwada, pichwada kahin bhi hoga lekin dil me kyon? Aur agar galti se aisa koi 'anootha' sa dard ho bhi jaye to isme shirt utar ke naachne wali kya baat hai?

Another part of the song says - 'Wo chhod gaya, dil tod gaya, pichhle mahine ki chabbis ko, dil me mere hai dard-e-disco'. Isse to aisa lagta hai ki shayad ye chhodne-todne ka kaam kisi disco me hua hoga. As a result - Dard-e-Disco! But again nothing has been said clearly. So the 'Disco' still remains a mystery.

Waise ek aham sawaal - Ye disco kar kaun raha tha? The dance performed by Shahrukh in the song is anything but disco. So, does that mean that its the dil that does the disco? Bhai, dil dhadakte suna tha, tootte suna tha, ye disco karne wala dil kahaan se import kiya ? Aur ye dil akela disco karta hai ya isko bhi couple entry ki zaroorat padti hai?

By the way, ek khaas baat. I initially felt ki ye gana mazak mazak me bana diya hoga but the kind of expressions that Shahrukh has given in the song really makes the Dard-e-Disco conspicuous on his face. And it was then that I realized - 'Yaar ye log to serious hain!' Aur tabhi dil me ek khayaal aaya - agar Dard-e-disco hai to Dard-e-break dance bhi hota hoga. May be Dard-e-break dance was the reason behind MJ's crotch holding moves and shrill 'aaooooooos'. And similarly there must be Dard-e-hip hop, Dard-e-Bharat-Natyam and who knows, even Dard-e-Mujra!

Anyway, ye to ab us 'Haseena, Neelam Pari' se mil ke hi pata chalega ki usey dekh ke dil me Dard-e-disco kaise aur kyon hota hai aur kaun kaun se doosre dard hote hain. Filhaal main apni ye random bakwaas band karta hoon. My final request to the lyricist -
"Javed Uncle, aise lyrics mat likha karo, padh ke dil me Dard-e-lyrics ho jata hai!"

Here's the video for those who haven't watched it yet
